speak thousands of small sentences to children every week.

Some sentences are loving. Some are practical. Some come out during stress, hurry, anger, tiredness, or frustration. Most parents do not mean to hurt their children. They are simply trying to correct behaviour, finish routines, or manage daily pressure.

But children take words seriously.

The way parents speak becomes part of how children understand themselves. A repeated sentence can slowly become a child’s inner voice.

That is why parenting is not only about what we do. It is also about what we say.

The goal is not to become a perfect parent. No parent speaks perfectly all the time. The goal is to notice a few common sentences that may create shame, fear, pressure, or confusion, and replace them with words that guide the child better.

Here are 5 things parents should try to stop saying to children — and what to say instead.

1. “Stop crying.”

Many parents say “stop crying” when a child is upset, hurt, tired, disappointed, or having a tantrum.

It may feel like a simple instruction, but to a child it can sound like:

“My feelings are not allowed.”

Crying is communication. Young children do not always have the words to explain sadness, fear, anger, tiredness, pain, or frustration. So they cry.

Instead of stopping the emotion immediately, help the child feel safe first.

Say:

“I can see you are upset.”
“It is okay to cry.”
“I am here.”
“You wanted that toy, and it was hard when I said no.”
“Take your time. We will solve it together.”

This does not mean giving in to every demand. Parents can still hold boundaries.

For example:

“You can cry, but I cannot allow hitting.”
“I know you want more chocolate, but the answer is no.”

The message becomes clear: feelings are allowed, unsafe behaviour is not.

2. “You are a bad boy/girl.”

Children make mistakes.

They hit, shout, throw toys, refuse food, lie, grab, cry, or break rules. These behaviours need correction. But calling the child “bad” attacks the child’s identity, not the behaviour.

When a child hears “you are bad” repeatedly, they may begin to believe they are the problem.

Instead, separate the child from the behaviour.

Say:

“Hitting is not okay.”
“Throwing toys can hurt someone.”
“I will not let you push.”
“You are angry, but we use words.”
“This behaviour needs to stop.”

This teaches the child what went wrong without making them feel unloved.

A child should know:

“I made a mistake” — not “I am a mistake.”

Correction works better when children still feel connected to the parent.

3. “Why can’t you be like your brother/sister/friend?”

Comparison is one of the most painful things children hear.

Parents may compare children to motivate them, but comparison often creates shame, jealousy, insecurity, or resentment.

Every child has a different pace.

One child may speak early. Another may take time. One may be social. Another may be shy. One may eat well. Another may struggle with food. One may enjoy writing. Another may prefer movement and play.

Comparison tells the child:

“Someone else is better than me.”

Instead of comparing, focus on the child’s own progress.

Say:

“You are learning slowly, and that is okay.”
“Yesterday you tried one bite. Today let’s try again.”
“You cleaned two toys. Now let’s do two more.”
“You are getting better with practice.”
“Your journey is yours.”

This builds confidence without making the child feel less than others.

4. “Big children don’t get scared.”

Children get scared of many things.

Dark rooms, loud sounds, strangers, dogs, water, school, stage performance, separation, doctors, toilets, insects, or sleeping alone can feel very real to them.

When parents say, “Big children don’t get scared,” the child may feel ashamed of fear.

Fear does not disappear because we deny it. It reduces when the child feels supported.

Instead, say:

“You feel scared. I understand.”
“It looks big right now.”
“I will stay with you.”
“Let’s try one small step.”
“You can hold my hand.”
“Brave means trying even when you feel scared.”

This helps the child build courage without feeling judged.

A child who feels accepted becomes more ready to try.

5. “I will leave you here.”

Many parents say this when a child refuses to walk, leave a shop, come from the park, or cooperate in public.

“I am going.”
“I will leave you here.”
“Bye, I am going without you.”

It may work for a moment because the child becomes scared. But it can create fear and insecurity.

Young children depend deeply on parents for safety. Threatening to leave them can make them panic, especially in unfamiliar places.

Instead, use clear and firm guidance.

Say:

“It is time to go. You can walk or I can carry you.”
“We are leaving the park now.”
“I know you want more time, but we have to go.”
“You can hold my hand or hold the bag.”
“Two more steps, then we reach the car.”

The boundary is still clear, but the child does not feel abandoned.

<a upset.”
“Let’s solve this together.”
“You can make a better choice.”
“I know this is hard.”
“I am proud of your effort.”
“You are learning.”
“Thank you for trying.”

These words become emotional support for the child.

What to Do When You Say the Wrong Thing

Every parent says something they regret.

Maybe you shouted. Maybe you compared. Maybe you said “stop crying” too harshly. Maybe you threatened or used a label in anger.

Repair matters.

You can go back and say:

“I am sorry I shouted.”
“I should not have said that.”
“I was upset, but I love you.”
“Let me say it again in a better way.”
“You are not bad. The behaviour was not okay.”

This teaches children that mistakes can be repaired.

It also teaches them how to apologise.

A parent does not need to be perfect to raise an emotionally secure child. A parent needs to be willing to reconnect.

How to Change Your Language Slowly

Do not try to change everything overnight.

Pick one sentence first.

For example, replace “stop crying” with “I can see you are upset.”

Practice it for one week.

Then replace another sentence.

Parenting language changes through repetition, just like children’s habits.

You can even write reminder lines on your phone or fridge:

“Name the feeling first.”
“Correct behaviour, not identity.”
“Guide without comparison.”
“Comfort fear before courage.”
“Set limits without threats.”

Small changes in language can slowly change the emotional environment at home.

Earlyhood Tip

Use this simple rule:

Before correcting your child, protect their dignity.

A child can learn better when they feel respected.

Correction with shame may stop behaviour for the moment. Correction with connection teaches better behaviour for life.

<picture></picture>

<g></g><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line>

Final Thought

Words shape childhood.

A sentence said once may be forgotten. children enter a room and immediately start talking.

Some children hide behind a parent, avoid eye contact, take time to answer, or refuse to join group activities.

Parents often worry when their child is shy.

They may think:

“Why is my child not mixing?”
“Will my child struggle in school?”
“Should I push more?”
“Is my child underconfident?”
“Why does my child talk at home but stay silent outside?”

Shyness is not a weakness.

Many shy children are thoughtful, observant, sensitive, careful, and deeply aware of their surroundings. They may simply need more time to feel safe before they participate.

The goal is not to change your child’s personality. The goal is to help your child feel confident while still being themselves.

Understand Shyness First

A shy child may not be refusing people.

They may be feeling unsure.

New places, loud groups, unfamiliar adults, birthday parties, school events, stage performances, or meeting relatives can feel overwhelming for some children.

A shy child may need time to observe before joining.

This does not mean the child is rude, weak, or badly behaved. It means the child’s comfort grows slowly.

Instead of saying, “Don’t be shy,” try to understand what the child is feeling.

You can say:

“It is okay to take time.”
“You can watch first.”
“I am here with you.”
“You can say hello when you feel ready.”

These lines help the child feel accepted.

Do Not Label the Child

Avoid saying in front of others:

“She is very shy.”
“He never talks.”
“She is scared of everyone.”
“He is not social.”
“My child is always like this.”

Labels can become a child’s identity.

When children hear adults describe them as shy again and again, they may start believing, “I am someone who cannot talk.”

Instead, use supportive language.

Say:

“She takes a little time to warm up.”
“He observes first and then joins.”
“She will answer when she is ready.”
“He is getting comfortable.”

This protects the child’s confidence.

Start With Small Social Steps

Confidence grows through small successful experiences.

Do not push a shy child directly into big situations like stage performance, crowded parties, or speaking in front of many people.

Start small.

Try:

Waving goodbye to one neighbour
Saying thank you to a shopkeeper
Ordering one item with parent support
Playing with one familiar child
Answering one simple question
Saying hello to a teacher
Choosing a book at the library
Joining a small activity group

Each small step builds courage.

Praise effort, not perfection.

Say:

“You said hello today. what to expect.

Before going to a party, school event, class, or new place, prepare the child gently.

Say:

“We are going to Aarav’s birthday.”
“There will be music and children.”
“You can stay near me first.”
“You do not have to talk immediately.”
“After some time, you can play if you want.”

You can also role-play at home.

Practice:

How to say hello
How to ask for a toy
How to say “Can I play?”
How to say “No, thank you”
How to answer name and age
How to ask for help

Practice makes real situations less scary.

Let the Child Warm Up Slowly

Some children need 10 minutes. Some need 30 minutes. Some need several visits before they feel comfortable.

Give them time.

At a playdate, don’t force your child to immediately join. Let them watch. Sit nearby. Talk softly. Offer one small step.

You can say:

“Would you like to sit near the blocks?”
“Should we watch the children play first?”
“Do you want me to come with you?”
“You can start by giving the ball.”

Slow participation is still participation.

Respecting the child’s pace builds trust.

Build Confidence at Home First

A child who feels capable at home slowly becomes more confident outside.

Give your child small responsibilities:

Keep books back
Choose clothes
Help set the table
Water plants
Feed a pet with supervision
Put toys in baskets
Help pack school bag
Serve snacks to family
Tell one story at bedtime

When children feel useful, they feel confident.

Also allow your child to make choices.

Ask:

“Do you want the red cup or blue cup?”
“Which story should we read?”
“Which T-shirt will you wear?”
“Should we draw or build blocks?”

Choice builds decision-making and self-belief.

Encourage Speaking Without Forcing

Some shy children talk a lot at home but become quiet outside.

Do not force them to perform.

Avoid saying:

“Say something.”
“Why are you quiet?”
“Speak loudly.”
“Everyone is watching.”
“Don’t embarrass me.”

These lines can increase anxiety.

Instead, support gently.

If someone asks your child a question, give them time. Do not answer immediately unless the child looks very uncomfortable.

You can say:

“You can tell aunty your name.”
“Take your time.”
“You can whisper to me first.”
“Would you like to show your drawing instead?”

Over time, the child learns that speaking is safe.

Create Safe Social Practice

Confidence grows when children get regular, low-pressure social exposure.

Try:

Small playdates
Story sessions
Art classes
Park visits
Parent-child group activities
Library visits
Music or movement classes
Family gatherings with familiar people

Start with settings that are not too loud or crowded.

For shy children, one or two kind friends are better than a large group.

A child does not need to become the most talkative person in the room. They only need to feel comfortable connecting in their own way.

Praise Courage, Not Personality Change

Do not praise only when the child becomes outgoing.

Praise small brave actions.

Say:

“You tried something new.”
“You joined for five minutes.”
“You asked for help.”
“You smiled at your teacher.”
“You played with one child today.”
“You stayed calm in a new place.”

This teaches the child that confidence is about trying, not becoming someone else.

Avoid Comparison

Comparison can hurt shy children deeply.

Avoid saying:

“Look at your cousin, she talks so well.”
“Other children are dancing, why not you?”
“Your friend is not scared.”
“Everyone is playing except you.”

Comparison creates shame.

Instead, focus on your child’s journey.

Say:

“You are learning slowly.”
“You took more time today, and that is okay.”
“We will try again next time.”
“I am proud that you came with me.”

Children grow better with encouragement than pressure.

When Should Parents Seek Support?

Most shyness improves with time, safety, and practice.

But parents may consider speaking to a pediatrician, child psychologist, or early childhood expert if the child’s fear strongly affects daily life.

For example:

The child avoids all social situations
The child is extremely distressed in school
The child refuses to speak outside home for a long time
The child has frequent panic-like reactions
The child cannot separate from parents at all
The child’s confidence is reducing over time

Getting support does not mean something is wrong. It simply helps parents understand the child better.

Earlyhood Tip

Use this simple confidence formula:

Accept first. Prepare gently. Practice small. Praise effort. Repeat calmly.

Shy children do not need pushing.

They need safe chances to try.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" now part of family life.

Children watch rhymes, cartoons, learning videos, games, video calls, and stories. Sometimes screens help parents finish work, manage travel, or keep a child busy for a short time. But when screens become the easiest answer for boredom, tantrums, meals, or bedtime, they can slowly affect daily routines.

The goal is not to make parents feel guilty.

The goal is to build healthier screen habits that support a child’s learning, sleep, behaviour, emotions, and family connection.

For children aged 2–8, screen time should not only be about “how many minutes.” It should also be about what they watch, when they watch, how they watch, and what screen time is replacing. The American Academy of Pediatrics now encourages families to look beyond only a fixed time rule and think about the child, content, calming, crowding out, and communication — known as the “5 C’s” approach.

Why Screen Time Needs Rules

Children do not naturally know when to stop watching.

Many apps and videos are designed to keep attention for longer. Autoplay, fast colours, short clips, and endless recommendations can make it hard for young children to stop by themselves.

That is why children need adults to create boundaries.

Without rules, screen time can crowd out other important things like sleep, outdoor play, reading, drawing, talking, pretend play, family meals, and independent play. The AAP’s toddler and preschool guidance specifically asks parents to think about what media is getting in the way of, such as playing, moving, exploring nature, looking at books, and chatting with family.

Rule 1: Decide Screen Time Before the Child Asks

Do not decide screen time during a tantrum.

Make a simple family rule in advance.

For example:

Weekdays: 30–45 minutes after homework or play
Weekends: One planned movie or limited cartoon time
No screens: During meals, before school, and before bedtime

When the rule is already clear, parents do not have to negotiate every day.

Children may still protest, but consistency helps them understand the routine.

Rule 2: Choose Better Content

Not all screen time is equal.

A slow, age-appropriate, educational video watched with a parent is different from endless random videos. For toddlers and preschoolers, AAP guidance recommends choosing high-quality content and watching together so children can understand what they are seeing and connect it with real life.

Choose content that is:

Slow-paced
Age-appropriate
Positive
Language-rich
Non-violent
Not overloaded with ads
Easy to understand
Connected to real learning or stories

Avoid fast, noisy, random videos that quickly move from one clip to another. These can make stopping harder and may overstimulate children.

Rule 3: Watch Together When Possible

Co-viewing means watching with your child and talking about what they see.

You can ask:

“What happened in the story?”
“Was that kind or unkind?”
“What colour was the car?”
“What would you do?”
“Can we try this activity after the video?”

This turns screen time into a conversation instead of passive watching.

AAP guidance highlights that co-viewing can help parents guide children, build connection, and understand the child’s digital experience better.

<a class="image-link image2 say this almost every day:

“My child does not listen.”

You may ask your child to put toys away, come for dinner, brush teeth, stop jumping on the sofa, wear shoes, or get ready for school. But your child continues playing, ignores you, says “no,” runs away, or listens only after you repeat the same thing many times.

This can feel frustrating.

But in early childhood, not listening is not always intentional disobedience. Many times, children are deeply involved in what they are doing, still developing self-control, struggling with transitions, or simply not understanding the instruction clearly.

Children aged 0–8 are still learning how to listen, pause, shift attention, follow steps, and manage emotions. So instead of thinking, “My child is doing this on purpose,” it helps to ask, “What is making listening difficult right now?”

Why Children Don’t Listen Immediately

Young children live in the present moment.

If they are building blocks, pretending with toys, watching something interesting, or running around, their brain is focused on that activity. When a parent suddenly says, “Come now,” the child may not shift immediately.

Listening requires many small skills:

Hearing the instruction
Understanding it
Stopping the current activity
Managing disappointment
Remembering what to do next
Actually doing it

For adults, this feels simple. For children, it takes practice.

Sometimes children also ignore instructions because they hear too many commands in a day. “Don’t run.” “Sit properly.” “Eat fast.” “Stop touching.” “Come here.” “Wear this.” “Don’t do that.”

When there are too many instructions, children may slowly stop responding to all of them.

First, Get Their Attention

Before giving an instruction, make sure your child is actually listening.

Instead of shouting from another room, go closer. Say your child’s name gently. Come down to their level. Make eye contact if they are comfortable. Touch their shoulder softly if needed.

Then speak.

For example:

“Aarav, look at me. It is time to keep the blocks away.”

This works better than saying the same line five times from far away.

Children listen better when they feel connected first.

Use Simple Instructions

Long instructions can confuse young children.

Instead of saying:

“Why are all your toys lying here? I told you so many times to keep everything properly. Now clean this room quickly because we have to go out.”

Say:

“Please put the blocks in the basket.”

One instruction at a time is easier to follow.

For younger children, use short and clear lines:

“Shoes on.”
“Come to the table.”
“Hands to yourself.”
“Books in the basket.”
“Brush first, then story.”

If the task has many steps, break it down.

Instead of “Get ready,” say:

“First wear your socks.”
“Now wear your shoes.”
“Now take your bag.”

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" stop something suddenly.

If your child is playing and you suddenly say, “Stop now, we are leaving,” the child may feel upset. But if you prepare them, cooperation becomes easier.

Use warnings:

“Five more minutes, then dinner.”
“Two more slides, then we go home.”
“One last story, then sleep.”
“After this puzzle, we will brush teeth.”

This helps the child’s mind shift from one activity to another.

You can also use visual or simple cues:

“When the timer rings, we clean up.”
“When this song ends, we wear shoes.”
“After three jumps, we sit for dinner.”

Children listen better when they know what is coming next.

Offer Limited Choices

Children like to feel some control.

Instead of giving open-ended options or forcing everything, offer two acceptable choices.

For example:

“Do you want to wear the red shoes or blue shoes?”
“Do you want to brush first or change clothes first?”
“Do you want to walk to the room or should I carry you?”
“Do you want to keep blocks or books first?”

Both choices lead to the same goal, but the child feels involved.

This reduces power struggles.

Avoid Repeating Too Many Times

When parents repeat instructions ten times, children learn that they do not need to respond the first time.

Try this:

Say the instruction clearly once.
Wait a few seconds.
Repeat calmly once more.
Then help the child follow through.

For example:

“It is time to keep the toys in the basket.”

If the child does not move, go near and say:

“I will help you start. Put this car in first.”

This teaches action, not just listening.

Praise Listening When It Happens

Parents often notice when children don’t listen, but forget to notice when they do.

Catch small moments of cooperation.

Say:

“Thank you for coming when I called.”
“You kept your shoes nicely.”
“I liked how you listened the first time.”
“You stopped running when I asked. That was helpful.”

Children repeat behaviour that gets positive attention.

Praise should be simple and specific.

Check the Real Reason

Sometimes children don’t listen because something else is happening.

They may be tired.
Hungry.
Overstimulated.
Too excited.
Feeling ignored.
Wanting connection.
Unable to do the task alone.
Confused by the instruction.

For example, a child may not wear shoes because they cannot put them on properly. A child may not come for dinner because they are too tired. A child may not clean toys because the mess feels too big.

When parents understand the reason, they can support better.

Earlyhood Tip

Use this simple formula:

Connect. Say clearly. Give time. Follow through.

First connect with your child. Then give a short instruction. Allow a few seconds to process. Then gently guide the child into action.

Listening is not built through shouting. It is built through consistency.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" parenting.

A child may cry loudly in a supermarket, refuse to leave the park, throw toys, scream before bedtime, or suddenly say “no” to everything. In that moment, many parents feel embarrassed, tired, angry, or helpless.

It is natural to feel this way.

But tantrums are not always “bad behaviour.” In early childhood, tantrums are often a child’s way of saying: “I am overwhelmed, tired, hungry, confused, disappointed, or unable to express what I feel.”

Young children are still learning how to manage emotions. They may not have the words, patience, or self-control to explain what is happening inside them. So the emotion comes out through crying, shouting, kicking, or refusing.

The goal is not to stop every tantrum immediately. The goal is to help the child feel safe, calm down, and slowly learn better ways to express feelings.

Why Children Have Tantrums

Tantrums usually happen when a child’s feelings are bigger than their ability to manage them.

Common reasons include:

Tiredness
Hunger
Overstimulation
Sudden change in routine
Wanting something they cannot have
Difficulty sharing
Screen time being stopped
Feeling ignored
Separation anxiety
Not having enough words to explain feelings

For adults, these may look like small problems. But for a young child, they can feel very big.

A child who cries because a toy broke is not trying to trouble you. A child who screams because the TV was switched off is struggling with disappointment. A child who refuses to leave the play area is finding it hard to transition from fun to routine.

When parents understand the reason behind the tantrum, it becomes easier to respond calmly.

What Not to Do During a Tantrum

During a tantrum, avoid reacting with more anger.

Try not to say:

“Stop crying right now.”
“You are being naughty.”
“Everyone is looking at you.”
“I will leave you here.”
“Big kids don’t cry.”
“Why are you always like this?”

These lines may stop the behaviour for a short time, but they do not teach emotional control. They may make the child feel scared, ashamed, or unheard.

Shouting usually increases the child’s stress. When both parent and child are upset, the situation becomes harder to manage.

A calm parent does not mean a weak parent. It means the parent is helping the child borrow calm until the child can find their own.

What to Do Instead

The first step is to pause.

Take a breath before responding. Lower your voice. Come down to the child’s level if possible. Keep your face and body language calm.

Then name the feeling.

You can say:

“I can see you are very upset.”
“You wanted more time to play.”
“You are angry because I said no.”
“You are tired and this feels hard.”
“I am here. We will calm down together.”

Naming feelings helps children understand what is happening inside them. Over time, they begin to use words instead of only crying or shouting.

Set Limits With Kindness

Being calm does not mean giving in to every demand.

Children need love, but they also need limits. The limit should stay firm, but the tone can stay kind.

For example:

“I know you want the toy, but we are not buying it today.”
“You are angry, but I cannot let you hit.”
“You can cry, but I will not allow throwing.”
“Screen time is over. We can read a book now.”
“We have to leave the park. You can hold my hand or I can carry you.”

This teaches the child that feelings are allowed, but unsafe behaviour is not.

<a ways.

Some children want a hug. Some need space. Some need water. Some need to sit quietly. Some calm down with deep breathing, a soft toy, or a familiar routine.

You can try:

A gentle hug
A quiet corner
Slow breathing together
Counting fingers
Offering water
Holding hands
Using a calm phrase like “You are safe”
Giving two simple choices

Avoid too many explanations during the peak of the tantrum. When a child is very upset, they cannot process long lectures. First help the child calm down. Teach later.

Talk After the Tantrum

Once your child is calm, talk briefly.

You can say:

“You were very angry when we left the park.”
“It is okay to feel angry.”
“But hitting is not okay.”
“Next time, you can say, ‘I need two more minutes’ or ‘I am upset.’”

Keep it short and simple.

This is how emotional learning happens. Not through fear, but through repetition, connection, and practice.

How to Reduce Tantrums Over Time

Tantrums cannot be fully avoided, but they can reduce when children feel more prepared and secure.

Try these habits:

Keep routines predictable.
Give warnings before transitions.
Offer limited choices.
Avoid too much screen time when the child is tired.
Carry snacks and water during outings.
Notice good behaviour.
Spend small moments of undistracted time together.
Use simple language for emotions every day.

For example, before leaving the park, say:

“Five more minutes, then we go home.”
“Two more slides, then shoes.”
“One last swing, then we say bye-bye.”

This helps the child prepare mentally.

Earlyhood Tip

During a tantrum, remember this simple line:

Connect first. Correct later.

First help your child feel safe and calm. After that, teach the right behaviour.

A child learns emotional control slowly. Every calm response from a parent becomes a model for the child.

<a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank"
