Many Indian homes naturally use more than one language.
A child may hear Kannada at preschool, Hindi with friends, Marathi with grandparents and English in books.
Parents sometimes worry:
“Will so many languages delay my child’s speech?”
For most children, the answer is no.
Multiple languages do not cause language delay
The American Academy of Pediatrics states that learning more than one language does not cause communication delays.
A multilingual child’s words may simply be spread across languages.
For example, they may know some words in English and others in Kannada.
Together, their total vocabulary can be similar to that of a child learning one language.
Use the language you know best
Parents do not need to force English at home if another language feels more natural.
Talk, sing, tell stories and read in the languages your family uses comfortably.
A strong home language can also help maintain connections with grandparents, family and culture.
What if you are concerned about speech?
A true language difficulty generally shows up across the languages a child uses.
If your child is not meeting communication milestones or loses previously acquired skills, speak with your paediatrician rather than stopping a home language.
💚 Earlyhood Parent Tip
Don’t choose between family language and learning.
Children can grow up hearing and using more than one language.
