Mobile phones, cartoons and tablets have become part of many children’s daily routines.
But when screen time becomes difficult to manage, even switching off the television can lead to tears.
The answer is not simply taking away devices. Children also need enjoyable alternatives.
Five simple changes to try
1. Set predictable screen times.
Decide when and for how long screens can be used.
2. Give a gentle reminder.
Tell your child when screen time is about to end.
3. Offer another activity.
Keep puzzles, colouring books, building blocks or favourite toys ready.
4. Create screen-free spaces.
Keep family meals and bedtime routines free from screens.
5. Follow family rules together.
Children notice how often adults use their phones too.
What do guidelines say?
WHO recommends no sedentary screen time for one-year-olds and no more than one hour daily for children aged 2–4 years; less is better. ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
For older children, focus on age-appropriate content, healthy boundaries and ensuring screens do not replace sleep, physical activity or family interaction.
💚 Earlyhood Parent Tip
Instead of saying only “No more phone,” offer something interesting to do together.
A family walk, simple board game or 15 minutes of dedicated play can make transitions easier.
